Icom Install

As I wanted local comms (2M & 70cm) along with HF, I installed my Icom IC-706MKIIG in the FJ. Install went fine. It’s like the FJ was designed for hiding wires.
Here is my install. Note: Photos were take a few weeks after install and I didn’t want to tear everything back apart, so the photos are lacking in that respect.

Here is where I mounted the head unit. I tried a couple of different mounts, but I settled on velcro for now until I'm positive I like it there. I can still get to the Rear Dif lock switch, but I may move it to the lower row of switches anyway.

2heads

Update: I’ve since added my IC-2720 Dual Band rig, along with a screwdriver antenna. I also fabbed an aluminum mount for both heads.

Here is my FM dual-band mount. It's motorized so I can lower the antenna before entering my garage.

This is how the mount attaches to the rear.

I ran the coax and the motor control wire thru the stock harness rubber conduit.

I mounted the RigRunner in this area. I was in a hurry so I didn't empty the box for the photo.

Here's the RigRunner. Photo was taken before I put the FJ back together when I did the install a few weeks ago.

r2d[1]

I ran the power from the RigRunner to the radio under the base panel here. Coax too.

r2e[1]

I mounted the 706 base unit here. I took out the tray that snaps into the storage box as I needed the room. It's secured from the top to the back wall. I ran a ground strap as you can see in the foreground.

r3[1]

I ran 10GA wire from the battery to the inline fuses then thru the firewall.

Close up shot of where I punched thru the grommet.

9/11/2007:
I’ve made a few changes to my setup over the past couple of months. I removed the IC-706MKIIG. I wasn’t doing much mobile HF work so I put it back in the house. I added a CB (mounted it to the right side of the center console). A CB makes more sense while off-roading.
